Quiet Season
South Africa’s seasons create an endless calendar of perfect experiences. Summer (December to March) is a time of endless sunshine, making Cape Town and the Garden Route ideal for beach escapes and scenic road trips. For those seeking the ultimate safari experience, the dry season (May to October) is unmatched; wildlife gathers at watering holes, presenting breathtaking encounters under golden skies. Winter (June to August) brings cooler days that are perfect for exploring the rugged mountains of the Drakensberg or embarking on a cultural journey through KwaZulu-Natal.

What to bring on your safari?
Above all, bring your curiosity, a sense of adventure, and plenty of storage space for photographs! For comfort on safari, opt for casual clothing that’s easy to wash and wear, with muted colours being ideal for blending into the surroundings during game drives. Since early morning and late afternoon drives can be chilly (especially in winter), dressing in layers is recommended to accommodate warmer midday temperatures.
Recommended safari packing list for South Africa:
Clothing in khaki, green, beige, or other neutral shades
Long-sleeved shirts (to protect from the sun and mosquitoes)
T-shirts
Shorts or a light skirt
Jeans or safari trousers for cooler days/evenings
Jackets or sweaters for chilly early mornings and late afternoons
A lightweight waterproof jacket for possible rain
Swim or beachwear
Comfortable walking shoes
Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, moisturizer, and lip balm
Binoculars and camera equipment
If you’re taking a small aircraft, be aware that luggage allowances typically cap at 15 kg (33 lbs) total, including hand luggage. Most lodges and camps do offer same-day laundry service.
